Rodney Fox is a legend in his own time in the shark community. I have known about Rodney since 1963 when he was viciously attacked by a great white shark and survived. Here are his own words about the attack: "I knew I had that fish. I was within range and he had not even given the little wiggle they usually do before moving off. Making perfectly sure of it I glided a couple of feet closer and was caressing the trigger into action when there was a crushing thump on my left side, as though I had been hit by a train. The gun spilled from my hand and the mask was knocked from my face. A great gurgling roar filled my ears as I was swooshed through the water at an alarming pace. The realization was both immediate and inevitable - it had to be a huge shark".

The doctors had put 92 stiches in Rodney's right hand, repairing severed tendons and the lacerations caused when he pushed the hand into the shark's mouth. With all the complications of the time they had not noticed that a tendon in the thumb had also been severed. Despite the severe injuries the hand is now fully operational again, with a slight shortening of its span the only lasting effect. What I personally remember about Rodney Fox is the day he told me I "have not suffered enough". I exclaimed that I had suffered enough. I told him "I have been up all night, with food poisoning, doing flip-flops on the toilet, and no sharks have showed up in six days, so I think I've suffered enough!". I must have been right, because on the seventh, eighth, and ninth days the Great White Sharks showed up and stayed.
