I first met Spencer in 1986, in diapers, right after he was born, in his crib. He was like any other baby, cute and small. I saw him grow up fast, and I wonder where all the time has gone. When Spencer and his dad would come to my home in San Diego, I would always show them slide shows of my most recent dive trips. I think Spencer liked these slide shows more than I was aware of at the time, because he was eager to go scuba diving also. So at the age of twelve, Spencer was certified in scuba diving at Monterrey, California. Our first trip together was to the Bay Islands of Roatan, the southwest part of the Caribbean, where I photographed Spencer and his dad many times with dolphins, groupers, and assorted fish and crustaceans. Spencer is now as tall as I am, and he is only a sophomore in high school. If he gets any taller, I'm going to have to kick his ass. Spencer has always been a straight A student, and plans to go to a prominent college, either at San Diego State University, the University of Southern California, Stanford, or Notre Dame. I am sure that he will do well at any of those schools. Spencer plans on making a career either as a professional diver, pilot, or as a farmer, for he loves the thought of having an extremely long farm.

I met Steve Longhofer at Winston Churchill junior high school in Sacramento. We later attended the same high school, La Sierra, and played football together. On offense, Steve played halfback and I played quarterback, and on defense Steve played defensive back and I was a linebacker. Steve Longhofer, Lou Weigand, and I, the team's offensive backfield, were all bigger than the guys on the line, so every extra yard we made was strictly from our own second effort, no thanks to our wimp linemen. Later Steve went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a breakman. He was rich, good looking, with a full head of hair, and got any woman he wanted. In later years, when his hair was thinning, he became a general contractor, and built some of the most gorgeous homes around Sacramento. Now Steve is a supervisor for Caltrans, and does a lot of travelling up and down the California coast. I turned Steve and Spencer on to diving in 1999, an event long overdue. Now we make it a habit to take diving vacations in the Caribbean or the South Pacific. Steve and I often talk about buying a nice cabin in the Caribbean and having Spencer take care of us when we're old. We like the idea but Spencer doesn't.
